Shattered Heart

Matthew 5:4 – Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. (NIV)

I watched as if it were rolling in slow motion — or it could have been me moving in slow motion. I stretched my hand forward as it rolled to the floor — shattering. My heart skipped a beat. My favourite coffee mug lay in pieces on the floor.

Then, I realized that it was my heart that was shattered and not just the coffee cup that I didn't know how to pick up. I was so raw with emotion, since my mum had passed away just days before, that I just stared at the broken pieces on the floor.

I sent a description of this event to my aunt, and this was her reply: "The glue to heal your heart is love; let me send the first blob of glue to you."

The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines the word "blob" as a small drop or lump or something viscid or thick. What a great visual to illustrate for us that love is the glue to heal our heart!

1 Corinthians 13:13 – And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. (NIV)

1 John 4:10 – This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. (NIV)

Love to heal the heart is what Jesus gave to us when He died on the cross for our sins. Who might need a blob of His love that we might share with them today?

Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank You for the cross that shows us Your enormous love for us. Help us to come alongside others and show them Your grace and Your love in all seasons of life. Thank You that Your timing is always right, even when we cannot see it in the midst of our grief. May we always have faith, hope, and love. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
